ENSv2 officially launched on Ethereum mainnet on October 27, 2026.
According to the official ENS announcement, the upgrade introduces a redesigned naming protocol with hierarchical registries and more granular permissions.
What This Means for ENS Holders
Existing .eth names remain valid. You don't need to register your name again to keep using it.
Migration is available. You can upgrade your existing .eth name through the new ENS App to access ENSv2 capabilities.
New registrations use ENSv2. New .eth registrations are handled by the v2 registrar.
More flexible subnames. Hierarchical registries and granular permissions give name owners more control over how subnames are managed.
Key Technical Improvements
Redesigned smart contracts. ENSv2 introduces a new protocol architecture built around hierarchical registries.
Two new apps. The ENS App provides an interface for everyday users to register and manage names, while ENS Explorer lets developers and advanced users inspect name ownership, configuration and resolution.
Universal Resolver V2. It resolves names through the new hierarchical registry structure and supports DNS name resolution, reverse resolution and offchain data retrieval through CCIP-Read.
